Jerzy Duszyński

President

The Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) is pleased to announce that the General Assembly of the Academy held in Warsaw on 19 March 2015 elected Professor Jerzy Duszyński as the President of the Academy for 2015-2018 term of office. On 9 April 2015 Prof. Jerzy Duszyński was formally appointed by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland.

Prof. Jerzy Duszyński, corresponding member of the Academy, is a leading Polish biochemist specialising in energy metabolism and molecular basis of mitochondrial diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. He is closely associated with the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS in Warsaw. In the years 2008-2009 he performed the function of the Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In the years 2011-2014 he served as the Dean of the Division of Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Prof. Jerzy Duszyński is a member of numerous international organisations and of editorial boards of leading scientific journals.
 

Mission

The mission of the Academy is the development, promotion, integration and dissemination of science as well as contribution to the development of education and enrichment of national culture. The tasks of the Academy comprise in particular: (1) research activities, (2) presentation of opinions and programs related to science and its practical application, (3) international scientific cooperation effected through membership in international scientific organizations and cooperation with foreign scientific institution, (4) education at different levels (PhD level in particular), (5) cooperation with other scientific and higher education institutions as well as with learned societies, (6) issuing opinions on drafts of legal acts concerning science and its application as well as higher education.

Highlights 2017 & 2018

In 2017 the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) co-organized Euro-CASE annual conference focused on the theme of CYBERSECURITY. The event took place in Supercomputing and Networking Centre in Poznań (Poland). The conference was focused on critical infrastructures, protection of the Internet of Things and industrial networks, and on the issue of national security and prevention of industrial cyber espionage.

Also in 2017 the Institutes of the PAS carried out various international research projects and organized international workshops and conferences. The Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute has been highly involved in international research on geothermal energy and on mineral resources. And the PAS Institute of Computer Science organised: CORBON 2017 workshop on Coreference Resolution Beyond OntoNotes; the 2nd European Language Resource Coordination workshop and ‘Statistics of Languages: Theories and Experiments’ interdisciplinary workshop. The Institute also co-organised the 19th European Agent Systems Summer School in Gdańsk (Poland), was vice-chairing PARSEME and TextLink COST actions, and it has been a partner institution of the Polish section of CLARIN ERIC consortium, constituting a part of the H2020 PARTHENOS consortium.

Additionally, in 2017 the Polish Academy of Sciences supported preparations for the 24th IFIP World Computer Congress, which will take place in Poznań, September 17 – 21, 2018.
