Jerzy Duszyński


The Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) is pleased to announce that the General Assembly of the Academy held in Warsaw on 19 March 2015 elected Professor Jerzy Duszyński as the President of the Academy for 2015-2018 term of office. On 9 April 2015 Prof. Jerzy Duszyński was formally appointed by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland.

Prof. Jerzy Duszyński, corresponding member of the Academy, is a leading Polish biochemist specialising in energy metabolism and molecular basis of mitochondrial diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. He is closely associated with the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS in Warsaw. In the years 2008-2009 he performed the function of the Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In the years 2011-2014 he served as the Dean of the Division of Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Prof. Jerzy Duszyński is a member of numerous international organisations and of editorial boards of leading scientific journals.


The mission of the Academy is the development, promotion, integration and dissemination of science as well as contribution to the development of education and enrichment of national culture. The tasks of the Academy comprise in particular: (1) research activities, (2) presentation of opinions and programs related to science and its practical application, (3) international scientific cooperation effected through membership in international scientific organizations and cooperation with foreign scientific institution, (4) education at different levels (PhD level in particular), (5) cooperation with other scientific and higher education institutions as well as with learned societies, (6) issuing opinions on drafts of legal acts concerning science and its application as well as higher education.

Highlights 2016

  • The Polish Academy of Sciences “Excellence in Science” Department was created in 2016 to offer support for ERC grant applicants in Poland through providing information, guidance and advice on ERC grants and the application process.
  • The Polish Institute of Advanced Studies is being created as an auxiliary scientific unit of PAS, conducting research within the framework of social sciences and humanities and aimed at making the Polish SSH more international.
  • In 2016, PAS signed new agreements on scientific cooperation with the Czech Academy of Sciences, the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), as well as the protocols with the Academies in the following countries: Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Mongolia, Moldova and Slovakia.
  • In September, a meeting of the Euro-CASE Innovation Platform took place in PAS Research Center “Energy Conversion and Renewable Resources” in Jabłonna, one of the most modern laboratory complexes in Europe. Main topics during the two-day discussions centred on innovation and energy.
