To solve global challenges, the involvement of engineering and technology at the highest level is a necessity and increasingly important. Traditionally, collaborating on shared engineering challenges have built bridges and created new opportunities for cooperation, also in a world that is increasingly complex and interconnected. But the current geopolitical landscape is characterized by tensions that haven’t been experienced for decades which has resulted in a decline in trust between major powers. The term ‘Engineering Diplomacy’ is inspired by ongoing discussion and initiatives related to Science Diplomacy and Technology Diplomacy which has longer track-records and more developed frameworks. However, neither of the two encapsulate the role of engineering sciences and engineering per say as a tool of and with a role in diplomacy. Hence, Engineering Diplomacy becomes relevant.
Technical academies can play a unique role in Engineering Diplomacy by virtue of their expertise in engineering. They can serve as valuable partners to industry in developing and implementing effective Engineering Diplomacy strategies, as well as to government and academia. Additionally, technical academies can provide a neutral platform for dialogue and cooperation, which is essential in an increasingly polarized world.
Euro-CASE members academies were consulted on their practices in the field of Engineering Diplomacy and it was decided to organise a workshop in 2025.
Academies were consulted on their practices in the field of Engineering Diplomacy and it was decided to explore the potential for ED to address the challenges of today’s complex geopolitical environment. By sharing knowledge, expertise, and best practices, academies can work together to strengthen international collaboration in engineering and promote peace, prosperity, and security for all. In addition, the work can result in recommendations on Codes of Business Ethics to be implemented on National level.
