01 Mar Futurist Lecture Series

Real Academia de Ingenieria (Spain) (RAI)
2020
As a result of the cooperation between the Royal Academy of Engineering and Fundación La Caixa (La Caixa Foundation), a series of lectures are being held under the title Futurists: Engineering and its new challenges, in Madrid, and will continue in the cities of Seville and Zaragoza, and are given by academicians of the RAI. Due to the global health situation, only two of the planned lectures could be held in 2020. The first of these lectures, Will we run out of water?, was given by Mr Elías Fereres, academician of the RAI, on 5th March 2020, who recalled that life on the Planet is not possible without water, and in the case of human beings, in addition to hydrating one’s body, water is essential for the production of food. http://www.raing.es/es/actividades/nos-quedaremos-sin-agua-por-el-fereres The second of these conferences, Artificial Intelligence: Fiction and reality, was given by Nuria Oliver on 24th September 2020. http://www.raing.es/es/actividades/inteligencia-artificial-ficci-n-y-realidad-por-nuria-oliver

24 Jan Journey to the center of the wood – Publication

Real Academia de Ingenieria (Spain) (RAI)
2020
The title: Journey to the center of the wood The date of publication: 21st January 2020 Authors: Mr Luis García Esteban Main themes: Forest engineering Nature of publication: Inauguration as full member academician Report availability (link, paper version...): Link, paper. The current production of wood in the world is about 3,800 million cubic meters, of which 50% is used as fuel (it is estimated that about 2,400 million people use wood as fuel to cover their basic needs such as cooking, boiling water or heating) and the other 50% becomes part of what is known as industrial roundwood, that is, the wood that feeds the first transformation production lines and cellulose pulp. Right now, it contributes 1% of the world's GDP, not including second transformation (furniture and carpentry). http://www.raing.es/es/publicaciones/discursos-de-ingresos/viaje-al-centro-de-la-madera

22 Oct The patient, technologies and ambulatory medicine

National Academy of Technologies of France (NATF)
2008
Due to the increased life expectancy and the related increase of chronic diseases (as opposed to acute disorders when patients are younger), an alternative approach to hospital care has become necessary: a third of the population of France and the US now suffers from chronic diseases.  Ambulatory medicine, which is a health care system that keeps the patient at home while offering him the same outstanding quality care that he would receive at the hospital, is such an economically viable approach, responding at the same time to the wishes of patients, to economic requirements and scientific, technological and medical developments. This report describes recent advances of ambulatory medical care, identifies obstacles to overcome and incentives to encourage and makes recommendations for future development with the aim of optimizing the management of healthcare costs, with special emphasis on the role of information technology to master the complex system of information flows between the many stakeholders.  It does also identify the potential hurdles and necessary incentives and looks at issues of compliance with existing law and legal adaptation to the new requirements.  It also evokes the necessary training of the various actors in order for the system to function adequately. Working-group Leaders: Francis Lévi, Professor of Medical Oncology and NATF Fellow, and Christian Saguez, Former Professor at École Centrale de Paris and NATF Fellow.
