National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) 2011Efficient roads and railways constitute the lifelines of individual mobility and logistics. Given the increasing burdens on government budgets, however, the maintenance and extension of the traffic infrastructure is becoming increasingly more difficult. Against this backdrop, acatech has made statements in its “Mobility 2020” on traffic development in Germany and offered recommendations for action in terms of the need-oriented advancement of the infrastructure as early as 2006. The study on hand is the revision and continuation of the developments forecasted then. It shows that the trend of regionally varying traffic growth is continuing. Particularly regional agglomerations of the so-called C category are therefore dependent on sustainable mobility concepts, including electric mobility and traffic management, while rural regions, e.g. in Northern Germany, feature a downward tendency. In the second part, the volume also presents ways how integrated mobility solutions could contribute to the solution of global challenges.
